Topic – Mountains

Role

I am a Mountaineer

Wonder Question

How do mountains challenge us?

Children using ‘concrete manipulatives’ to help embed place value concepts.

The children were active when they had to locate photographs of the ‘The Seven Summits’ and the highest peaks in the countries of the UK.  The children then had to write the heights of each and use maths skills to put them in order.

The children used mixed media to create land and city scapes. These images show them practicing using paint, pastels, charcoal and paper to get desired effects.

Three children each week take a book bag home and produce work whilst enjoying a hot chocolate.  Here are some of the photos showing the work after reading poetry, non-fiction or fiction books.

Topic – Vikings and  Anglo Saxons

Role

I am an archaeologist

Wonder Question

If Vikings and Anglo Saxons had social media, what would they post about?

The children became archaeologists for the afternoon and excavated chess pieces and coins from rock.  Using brushes and water, the children released their treasure.  They also used brushes to find artefacts covered in soil.

As part of our Remembrance Day celebrations, a war veteran came into school to explain the reasons for selling poppies.  This was in conjunction with Burnley Football Club in the community.

Some of our children participated in ‘Play Leader’ training provided by the School Sports Partnership.  This is the organisation that sorts all the competitions.  The children will now organise and manage some games on the playground at lunch times for the other children in school.

PSHE

This half term, Year 5 pupils will learn how the PANTS rules can help them recognise unsafe situations and understand when and how to seek help from a trusted adult. They will develop their understanding of boundaries, consent and making assertive choices, as well as learning to use appropriate vocabulary to describe their feelings and take responsibility for them.

Science

The children have been separating mixtures using filtration, evaporation, magnets and sieving.

Gymnastics

The children worked with a partner to build a sequence on mats and on apparatus.  They had to use travelling, rolls, jumps, counter balances and counter tension balances.

Play Leaders

In teams of 3, some of our class have been working as play leaders.  They plan, resource and deliver games where children can earn personal bests.

RE – Colour Run

The children studied the Hindu festival of Holi.  They then threw powder paints at each other in the way that Hindus do whilst celebrating.
