Welcome to our class page
Here you can see what we have been getting up to and learning about in Reception Class at our school. Keep an eye out for some of the children’s fabulous work 🙂
Our topic work
In Reception Class we cover lots of topics! These can be based on a particular book, be based on children’s interests or following a whole school theme 🙂
Reception Class Summer 1
The overarching topic of ‘Spring and Lifecycles’.
We have been looking at seasonal changes and signs of spring. We have looked at spring as a time of ‘growth’ linking this in with Personal, Social and Emotional Development where possible. Linking a season of change and the changes that we have had in recent times.
For Knowledge and Understanding of the World, we have looked at the lifecycle of a frog, a butterfly and the human growth cycle.
The theme of spring has enabled us to look at the parts of a plant and their needs. Children have enjoyed planting seeds and looking after our outdoor area. They have been gardening, planting and watering the plants.
We have been looking at animals and their young. We learnt about spring animals and the correct terms for their young. Children loved learning that a baby goat is a kid; a baby horse is a foal, a sheep and a lamb.
We have been reading many rhyming books to link phonological awareness, word families and preparation for writing. The children have loved the ‘Oi Frog series to help with their understanding of rhyme and structure.
Due to a week of isolation, we carried out home learning via Seesaw. We started our new topic of ‘Traditional Tales’. This worked well, as parents could engage with it due to the familiarity of the topic.
Children shared well-known stories with adults at home and later focused on the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Back in school, children have looked at the story of Billy Goats Gruff. They have been retelling the tale, acting it out, writing parts of the story and making bridges or boats to get across the river! The topic will continue until the May half term, with Little Red Riding being a focus text.
Our home learning is set via our online learning app ‘Seesaw’.
All children have their own individual logins for this and you can access the daily tasks on there.
Weekly plans are emailed to parents for home learning for that week.
