Change4Life Festival

Ollie, Josh, Lexi and Kaila thoroughly enjoyed the Change4Life Festival at the Prairie this week, especially the mini-golf!

Mmmmm, yummy!

Reception Class made the most delicious rhubarb crumble in Forest School this week.  The took the rhubarb from their class garden, chopped it and put it in the dutch oven along with the crumble mix they had made.  Cooked over the campfire, it tasted delicious!

Walk to School Week

What a phenomenal success ‘Walk to School Week’ has been with over 120 children taking part in the Walking Buses each day.  Don’t forget that you can join the Walking Bus every Friday at 8.30am on the Thornton Arms car park, or anywhere along its route up Brownside Road.

Reception Class and Year One spent a lovely day at Towneley learning about the art work in the Hall, and the wildlife in the woodland.


Rocket Science

Year Five are taking part in a project to discover if travelling to space impacts on the germination and growth of rocket seeds.  Major Tim Peake has been caring for the seeds before sending them back to Earth for primary school children to grow and monitor.

W Factor sell-out success

Elite Sports’ Development

The adults in school have all chosen a ‘mystery book’ for the school library.  Which one will you pick?


Trout Eggs in Year Five

This week Year Five took delivery of 100 trout eggs into their specialist tank.  The will care for and observe the eggs until hatched and ready to release into the River Brun.  The children are enjoying being involved in restocking our local waterways.


What does it mean to be British?

This half term our assemblies are focusing on what it means to be British.

This week we thought about the Rule of Law and how this matches with our School Charter.

Ronnie is our very first Bronze Award winner of the year.  We are very proud of him indeed!

Farewell to Year Six

Four of our children took part in the cycling time trial event this week.  We came fourth overall and had a great time.

…you’ll find Year Six.  Whilst the majority of our Year Six children visited their new high schools on Thursday, the remaining seven went for a walk in Hurstwood and built Kensuke’s Kingdom-style dens.

Ten Pieces Concert

Year Four did a wonderful job when they performed at the BBC Ten Pieces concert at Preston Guild Hall.  It was a late night but worth it to take part in such a fabulous event.  Thank you to Lancashire Music Service for organising it.

BBC Ten Pieces Concert

Year Four are taking part in the BBC Ten Pieces concert at Preston Guild Hall next Wednesday.

Family Camp Out

What a fantastic time we all had at the Family Camp Out on Friday.  There were so many staff and families taking part that we thought we might have to camp on football field too.  Thank you to everyone who helped out and to the chippy for our tea.

Our team took part in a BFC Tournament this week and had a great time.  We were very proud of them all.  Thank you, Mr McKay, for taking them.


Nepal Earthquake Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who took part in our fundraising event today.  We raised £440, some of which came from the children’s own spending money.

Magical Folk in Year One

After putting their hearts and souls into training this season, our netballers shone at the inter-schools competition this week.  They came joint-first after winning three and drawing one match.  they are excited to have got through to the Cup Competition and we are looking forward to hearing how they get on.

1950’s Dance

This half term our Y6 children have been learning about 1950’s music and dance.  Over the weeks they have choreographed their own dances.  Today they showcased their moves and invited Reception Class to join them.  They looked fabulous and Reception Class thoroughly enjoyed themselves too! Farewell to our trout 🙁

Year Three visited the River Brun in Thompson Park on Thursday to release their trout fry into the water.  The children have done a wonderful job of looking after the fish and were sad to see them go.  We have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this project and extend a big thank you to Steve and Neil for all their help.

Primary Engineer Project

This term Year Four have been taking part in Burnley’s Primary Engineer Programme.  They have made motorised vehicles and tested them for strength, power uphill and ability to drive in a straight line.  Four of the children represented their class in a competition at Turf Moor on Tuesday.. Recording Stars

Our choir was invited to record a song for the BBC to use as part of their new Walking Bus campaign.  They had a fabulous time.  Thank you to Mrs Fort to inviting our school to take part.

This week our Tag Rugby team played in a tournament at Burnley Rugby Club and came 6th out of the 25 teams taking part.  We are very proud of them all.

Katie Morag’s New Jumper

Year One have been reading lots of Katie Morag stories as part of their Island Homes topic.  They felt a little sorry for Katie as she is wearing the same jumper in every story.  Look at all they new designs they have made for her.


Behaviour Quality Mark: Gold

This week Mrs Young went to Chorley to receive a Gold Behaviour Quality Mark on behalf of everyone at our school.  Well done to all the staff, children and their families for making our school such a friendly, happy and safe place to learn.


Thank you!

The funds raised from the Christmas Fair have been used to purchase a defibrillator for school.  We took delivery of it this week and several members of staff received training in its use.  We hope never to have to use it but are extremely grateful to the contributions everyone made towards purchasing it.


Getting creative with trout!

As part of their work on rivers, Year Three are hatching trout eggs to release into the River Brun.  This week they were visited by an artist and a musician and have created pop-up books and a song – all about trout!

This week Year Four have designed maps of deserted islands, as inspiration for their writing.  They have had some super ideas for what they might find there.

Stopping on the zig-zag lines

Our Year Six children are keen to encourage parents not to drop their children off on the zig-zag lines outside our school.  They helped to design this banner.  We hope it does the trick.


Following the Rules

This morning’s assembly was a story about a little boy who was the only one to follow the rules set by the Emperor.  As a reward, he was chosen to become the next Emperor.  Thank you to Harvey and Charlie who helped Mrs Young to tell the story.

Thank you to Leo’s Grandad for providing authentic props for Year One’s Post Office role-play area.  You can see that they are being put to superb use.


We love snowy days!

Thank you to all the parents and carers of children in our school for sending their children to us dressed for the weather.  We were all able to play out in the snow today and have a great time building snowmen.  There was an awful lot of teamwork on show this morning.  Well done to all the children for playing so beautifully together.

Restocking the Library on the Book Bus

Today we were visited by Lancashire Library Service’s Book Bus.  Representatives from each class visited the bus to select new titles for our school Library.  Here are some of the children from Years Five and Six having a good time choosing some new books.


Paramedics visit Reception Class

Don’t panic!  It was all part of the class topic ‘People Who Help Us’.  The children learnt about what is inside the ambulance, the special equipment that paramedics use, how to bandage an injured arm and how to put each other in the Safe Airway position.  What a busy morning! Snowy Days!

We’ve had fun in the snow.  There may have only been a tiny bit but we managed to make some snowmen.


Visit from 2BR’s Christopher Dean

Chris from 2BR visited the Y3 and Y4 party this afternoon to record our children singing the ‘Sleeps til Santa’ song.  They can’t wait to hear themselves on the radio later this week.


Angel Express

The Infant Nativity The Angel Express was an absolute delight with the children making us all so proud of them.  When the Angel Gabriel delivered the Baby Jesus there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

Restocking the waterways

We are very lucky to be taking part in a project aimed a restocking the local rivers with trout.  This week we took delivery of a tank and will receive our trout eggs in January.  We will keep you posted on how we are doing with our tiny visitors.


We are Gold!

We are thrilled be able to tell you all that we have just earned a Gold Behaviour Quality Mark after a behaviour audit by the local authority.  The staff and children are very proud and can’t wait to officially receive our plaque in February.

Year Three have thoroughly enjoyed their ‘Chocolate’ topic this half-term.  Over the past fortnight they have designed and made their own chocolate bars, including the packaging.  They have made a great job!

Rugby Team on a Winning Streak

Congratulations to our rugby team who played three matches in a tournament on Wednesday and won them all!  A wonderful performance from all members of the team.

Mr Lomas has had a special birthday today, which we celebrated in assembly.  To mark the occasion, all the grown ups came to school dressed as Mr Lomas.  Can you find him?


Forest School

Reception Class have had a great time in the Forest School this week, learning how to use tools.  They have been whittling wood with potato peelers and dying fabric by hammering leaves onto material.  What a good job they’ve done!

Y6 Safer Cycling Training

Year Six did brilliantly with their Safer Cycling training.  They started out on the school playground, learning new skills and allowing the instructors to assess their ability.  Then they moved out onto the roads around school in small groups.  We were very pleased to present the children with their ‘Bikeability’ Certificates on Friday morning in assembly.

Commemorating the start of WWI



We have had a wonderful week commemorating the start of World War One.  The children have shown great care and maturity when learning about this incredibly emotive topic.  We would like to say a huge thank you to Mr B from Balestra School Workshops for bringing our learning to life, and to all our friends who joined us for a special assembly at the end of the week.

Year Five’s work with Global Renewables

Year Five were visited by staff from Global Renewables in Farington, Leyland, who taught them all about recycling and re-using.  The highlight of their learning was when the class visited the Recycling Centre itself and saw what happens to all our rubbish.

Year Six visit to Unity College

Golf Tournament

It was a grey day but we still enjoyed the competition.  The highlight was when James hit the ball over the fence!  Move over McIlroy!

Year Three have thoroughly enjoyed this half term’s PE lessons with Sanderson’s Dance, where they have learnt how to dance ‘Hip Hop’.  Their final performance was very impressive indeed.

The Infants were treated to a Pirate-themed visit from the Story Bus.  Oooh aaargh!

Mrs Young and seven children were invited to Media City in Manchester to help the BBC develop a new project to encourage schools to have a ‘Walking Bus’.  They had a great time!


Journalist Visit

Year Four were visited by Andrew Chamberlain, a journalist with a national newspaper.  He came to talk to them about his job and to inspire them to do their best with their own journalistic writing.
